Edo Kotobuki Jishi: Shishi Mai (lion dance)

PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, PRESENTATION & WORKSHOP in Ann Arbor (MI) with Eien Hunter-Ishikawa

Commonly translated as "lion dance," the shishi mai of Edo (the old name for Tokyo) consists of one person as the shishi and three accompanying musicians playing taiko (drum set), atarigane (brass hand percussion), and shinobue (bamboo flute).  Shishi mai performances are thought to bring good fortune and can often be seen at celebratory occasions. The version our GLTC guest artist Eien Hunter-Ishikawa will perform for us is in the style of Wakayama Shachu. Eien will also share about the shishimai art form in a presentation with Q&A and invite participants to learn some movements from the dance in an interactive workshop experience.

LOCATION: Rudolf Steiner High School GYM (2230 Pontiac Trail, Ann Arbor, MI 48104)
COST: This event is offered FREE and open to GLTC members, Steiner School community, and the general public. Donations to GLTC in support of Eien’s Michigan visit are welcome!
