Mushi Okuri Project

GLTC Mushi Okuri 虫送り Send Away Bugs! This traditional song from the Kaga area of Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan is often one of the first pieces students learn at the Great Lakes Taiko Center. In 2020 this song became the heart of our community project to stay connected and uplift our spirits during pandemic times as we played Mushi Okuri together to Send Away Bugs!

Send away sickness > Heal & Grow!
Send away misfortune > Welcome abundance!
Send away negativity > Share positive energy!

Mushi Okuri is a song based on traditional rhythms from Ishikawa, Japan. You can hear these rhythms at late summer festivals in the Kaga area of Ishikawa. The intention is to drive away pests, bad luck, evil spirits and sickness from the communities.

When I began studying taiko in 2007, Mushi Okuri was one of the first songs I was taught at Asano Taiko. When I opened the Great Lakes Taiko Center in Michigan in 2010, I also decided that it would be one of the first songs we teach our students as well.

In the middle of March, we made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend all of our classes and events until the stay-at-home orders were lifted. As we all work together to stay socially distant and stay healthy, we sought out ways we could stay positive and stay connected.

Is there a more appropriate time than in the midst of a global pandemic to share a song we all know and is intended to drive away sickness?

For the past couple weeks we have been collecting clips of our community performing Mushi Okuri. We have put them all together in this video to share. I hope it brings you some joy and happiness as you navigate these challenging times. Please feel free to share this video. The more you share it, the more positive energy we can send out! If you share, please use the hashtags: #MushiOkuriProject #CoronaOkuri

Stay Safe! Stay Healthy! Stay Happy! and Keep washing your Hands!

Mushi Okuri Project 2020

Thank you for joining us to play together during these challenging times in the spirit of Mushi Okuri, not only for protecting crops at harvest time, but also to collectively send away illness, negative thoughts, and misfortune from the community, and to welcome wishes for good health, channel positive energy, and bring good fortune to all!

April 2020 General guidelines & tips for recording:

  • Record your video in horizontal/landscape orientation (not vertical/portrait).

  • Keep the recording camera/phone in a stable position, placed on a table, stand or tripod, rather than handheld.

  • Try to listen to the demo video with your headphones or earbuds on while you play along, so that you are recording mainly your sound, but don’t worry if you can’t.

  • What you wear and where you record is your choice (as long as you have decent taste and lighting).

  • You can play on any instrument you have at home (drums, pads, desk, chair, air taiko, rolled towel, pillows and cushions, pots and pans, your voice, your body, etc.) with bachi, other sticks, or even arms and hands or feet.

  • Pick any taiko part to play. Most of you will play a nagado part, but if you can and want to play another part (shime, ojime parts, or various narimono, for example) or need to improvise parts you don’t know yet, then go for it. This is your chance to be creative (keep it simple or go next level).

  • Focus on the fun and don't worry about whether your video is perfect or good enough. We will take whatever you submit and contact you if there are any issues. We just want everyone to have fun doing this project!
