Our outdoor (weather permitting) taiko classes and group practices resume for a new season this October weekend as we Fall back into our taiko playing rhythm together. Great Lakes Taiko Center (GLTC) Members can now register for Taiko Play classes and a new Taiko Workshop series described below:
Taiko Play outdoor classes with Larry An & Eileen Ho of Raion Taiko will continue on Saturdays at 1pm ET in Novi (MI) and on Sundays at 4pm ET in Ann Arbor (MI) starting the weekend of Oct. 9th & 10th 2021.
Taiko Play is open to all levels of experience, from beginning students to seasoned performers. Each class will be a fun mix of physical warmup, rhythm drills, run through of greatest hits, and whole song study. This 55min class meets outdoors (weather permitting) with COVID safety practices. Practice drums will be provided on site; bring your own bachi sticks or ask us for options.
Taiko Workshop ~Series 1~ with Kyoko Johnson, Noriko Maidens & Rieko Muroi-Bowman (members of Godaiko Drummers and Sakura Japanese Instrumental Group) is a new offering this Fall as a four week series of outdoor sessions starting on Saturday Oct. 16th from 11:30am-12:30pm ET in Novi (MI).
Students with all levels of taiko experience are welcome to join this Taiko Workshop series which explores playing on a combination of large and small drums, along with other instruments, and together as a group in a form called "kumi-daiko" or taiko ensemble drumming.
To develop our performance skills and playing technique, we will practice playing rhythm patterns to a song melody. We will also review basic taiko “kata” or form & movement as well as bachi control. Participants may stay for an optional 15 min of informal group discussion time - including Q&A, sharing experience, and feedback - after each workshop session.
