SPRING 2023 T3/BBK SONG CLASS IN NOVI-WIXOM (MI)
T3 practice / BBK song class
Saturdays (3-5 pm ET)
with optional WED night Zoom sessions (TBA)
LOCATION: Center For Performance Arts & Learning

Both T3/BBK sessions are open to all Tanoshii Taiko Tai (T3) group members and other GLTC member students of all levels interested in studying Bondaiko, Bon dance, Kane (BBK) festival music and folk dance, and led by our BBK Teaching Team: Noriko Maidens, Kyoko Johnson, Rieko Muroi-Bowman and Akiyo Fisher (Godaiko Drummers).
T3 group practice (3-4 pm): Practice basic skills for playing technique on various Taiko drums. We will also incorporate other Taiko arts elements like the fue (bamboo flute), voice, body movement/dance, and kane (brass percussion instrument). Enjoy playing festive music together through practice drills and review of T3 group performance repertoire which includes the song Narushima by Katsuji Kondo and other pieces from the BBK song list.
BBK song class (4-5pm): Learn and practice the festival song Ei Ja Nai Ka by PJ Hirabayashi, also on kaDON.com, and the piece Umi no Ohayashi (“Umi” means ocean) by Dengakuza.
T3/BBK session dates for Spring 2023:
SAT 4/8, 4/15, 4/22 (no class 4/29);
5/6, 5/20 (no class 5/13 & 5/28);
6/3, 6/10, 6/17 (no class 6/24 & 7/1 for Summer Break)
GLTC members may join any time (non-members can register for a Trial session with $25/class drop-in fee at https://michigantaiko.net/class-listing). Bring your own bachi sticks or ask us for options ($10/pair of new bachi).
SPRING 2023 TAIKO PLAY KADON! CLASS IN ANN ARBOR (MI)
A2 Taiko Play kaDON! with Eileen & Larry
Sundays (3-4:30pm ET)
WHO: Taiko Play kaDON! is open to all levels of experience, from beginning students to seasoned performers, and is led by Eileen Ho & Larry An of Raion Taiko.
WHAT: Each class will be a fun mix of physical warmup, rhythm drills, and play-based song study, including selections from GLTC (Mushi Okuri) and kaDON.com repertoire (Wa no Ichi, Ready Set kaDON!). Practice drums will be provided on site and class resources shared online.
WHERE: Rudolf Steiner High School (2230 Pontiac Trail, Ann Arbor, MI 48105) indoor Assembly Hall.
WHEN: This 1.5 hour class meets 3-4:30pm* on Sundays each month, except as noted. *NEW extra half hour is added for further song study.

SPRING 2023 MICHINOKU SONG CLASS IN ANN ARBOR (MI)
Ann Arbor Rec & Ed — Adult Enrichment Music program:
Explore Taiko with Michinoku
DATES: Tuesdays Apr 11th - May 23rd 2023 (no class on 5/2)
TIME: 7:00PM - 8:30PM ET
LOCATION: A2 STEAM (Northside) School, Ann Arbor, MI
FEE: $180/6 classes; optional bachi $10
DESCRIPTION: Ages 13-Adult. Explore the art of Japanese Taiko drumming with us! We will practice basic rhythms, vocal expression, and physical movement through “Michinoku,” a song composed in remembrance of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. No prior taiko or music experience is required—all are welcome! We will provide taiko (drums), and you can borrow, bring, or purchase your own pair of bachi (wooden drum sticks). Instructors from the Great Lakes Taiko Center: Mathew Jacqmin-Kramer with Eileen Ho.
[We ask all participants to follow GLTC COVID safety protocols while on site, including wearing a mask during class.]
NOTE: This course is hosted by Ann Arbor Rec & Ed and is not included in our GLTC membership monthly fee.
